The Cause I Support

Some people are actively involved in promoting and supporting a cause, such as the release of international political prisoners or protecting the environment. Is there a cause you actively support? Write an essay convincing readers to support that cause

As an American citizen and a human being, I am a firm believer in the Bill of Rights. I support the Bill of Rights and most aspects of the Constitutions because it protects the rights of the American people. The United States Constitution is a document that ensures the rights and liberties of the American people. A right that I consider to hold great importance in any society is privacy, which is addressed in Amendment IV. Amendment IV states “The right of the people to be secure in the persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the person or thing to be seized.” (The United States Constitution) Basically, Amendment IV protects the American people from irrational searches of their home and documentation, without precedent. Unfortunately, this amendment is no longer in affect, due to the USA PATRIOT Act, which was created after the events of 9/11. In my opinion, this Act is extremely unconstitutional and should be abolished. Amendment IV should be reinstated.

Privacy is something that I consider an inalienable right. To my understanding, this is a right that an American citizen no longer has. The government can look through private and important documents and search your possessions, without probable or lawful cause. Some people may feel that taking such action is necessary to ensure our safety, but I believe that it gives people a reason to be fearful of the government, which is absolutely absurd.  In the words of V “People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.” The disregard of Amendment IV is symbolic for what is to come. Establishing an act that is in complete opposition of the Constitution is like shredding the Constitution, in front of America. I cannot speak for others, but it gives me an uneasy feeling knowing that the document that this country was founded on to protect us is becoming void and that I can be under close watch at any point in time.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that Amendment IV should be reinstated because privacy is a right that should never be abolished. A government should never use fear tactics to ensure the safety of its people. Would you want to live in fear that someone is always looking over your shoulder? If you are interested in protecting your right of privacy in your home, I think that you should definitely join this cause.
